What Is A Criminal Background Check

Criminal checks are a complete search of a person's history. Many employers use criminal checks on their new employees to make sure that they know who it is that they are hiring, as well as to gauge how truthful and trustworthy a person is before hiring them. According to studies, as many as 40 percent of people applying for jobs put misleading information on their resumes, or lies about their qualifications, in order to get a job. By using criminal checks, the employer will know the truth about a future employee regarding their run-ins with the law.

Many jobs in government agencies make it a policy that candidates for a job must have a background check done, and in some instances a thorough investigation of an application is needed. Criminal checks are also useful for people other than employers. If you are hiring a nanny or babysitter, for example, it would be in your best interest to know the whole truth about the person who you will be entrusting your children with. Many people who are dating or taking on a business partner also like to know who it is that they are getting involved with, and if this person is trustworthy.

Criminal checks can help ease the concerns of being harmed by an unsavory person in any situation. While background checks are a great way to find out the truth about people, there are some rules that must be followed, most of all by employers. Employers that want to use a background check on a possible applicant must tell the person they are investigating beforehand, and only the applicant can give permission for the background check to take place. In order to get an accurate account of a potential employee, the employer will need to know the applicant's movements, such as where they have previously lived, which is easy information to retrieve by using criminal checks.
