Definition Of Pre Employment Screening



Pre employment screening is a process that many companies use to check the official and commercial records of any person that they are considering hiring. Not all jobs require pre employment screening tests, but those with high security clearances, access to large quantities of money, or those that require caretaking usually do. Military contractors, banks and schools, for example, often require pre employment screenings for potential staff members.

Some of the common information include in pre employment screenings are past employers, credit worthiness and criminal histories. These types of pre employment tests are important for many industries, because they provide more informed and less subjective evaluations about people, and deter those that could pose risks. Some people argue that access to pre employment screening promotes discrimination, identity theft and violations of privacy, but the industry is under tight control to avoid these abuses.

Pre employment screening, if done correctly, is a practical and inexpensive way to avoid theft and dishonesty from staff members, and to increase the productivity and safety of the whole team. Banks, lending institutions, security companies, transportation industries, police departments, schools and many other organizations already require pre employment tests. A lot of retailers and even small businesses are requiring this type of screening for their applicants, as well.

The type of pre employment screenings that companies do may vary, but its purpose is always the same: to eliminate or reduce negligent hiring liability, and ensure a workforce that is as trustworthy as possible.
