By not doing employment background checks, a company could be hiring a criminal and not know it until it's too late. Investigating a person's criminal background can either be done online using database information or by a physical record search. Of the two, online employment background checks are the easiest to perform. For a small fee, employers may access the public record in a matter of minutes. The one drawback, however, is that online databases might not have as much information readily available. Due to numerous errors, omissions and lag time in reporting, most state repositories contain less than 35% of possible charges. Also, applicants could possibly omit the cities and states in which they have criminal convictions.

There are different forms of documents that can be collected in order to find out about a person's criminal background. All information collected is compiled into a criminal history profile that the employer will likely keep on records for reference. Many employment background checks will benefit the employer because they can catch a criminal before it's too late.
